In 1914 the Wyoming Tie and Timber Company started running tie-cutting operations near Dubois. The ties supplied the CB & Q Railroad.Mostly Scandinavian immigrants populated the logging camps and went into the forest with their broad ax and cross cut saw. They were hard workers. Snow was not an issue, the ties were cut all year round. In spring with high water the ties were floated down the creeks first and then down the Wind River into Riverton. Some small creek canyons were a challenge to engineering. The solution were the flumes, wooden channel frames, that were floated and so let the ties slide downwards. Some of the flumes hung up high on the walls of the canyon.
Remnants of the flumes and of some tie hack cabins can still be seen up in the Union Pass area along Warm Springs Creek where the biggest camp was located and formed a little town of its own.

The Tie Hack Memorial is located about 15 Miles west of Dubois on the way to Togwotee Pass.
The Town of Dubois pays tribute to this part of its history with the revival of the Swedish Smorgasbord Dinner in late spring.
