DUBOIS MUSEUM

The Dubois Museum

Thousands on thousands years passed and the valley was completed - built by many forces of nature. On one side were the brilliantly colored badlands that still hold fossil clams and snails that lived in the streams which flowed into a basin from young mountains. On the other side were the tumbled rocks and gravel left by glaciers that had carved deep canyons through the mountains. On all sides were mountains - lava and limestone rising toward the granite of the highest peaks.

The Crow Indians used this valley as their hunting ground sharply disputed by the Shoshone and the Blackfeet who claimed ownership too. The Astorians came and went through Union Pass on their way to Oregon. Mountain men and trappers came and sought the beaver.

old Cabin from the Dubois area In about 1866 the first family came in a wagon and built a cabin 10 miles up the river. More came. They trapped and hunted, they gathered wild horses and harvested wild hay, they raised cattle and children. The first business opened - a saloon followed by a general store. (taken from Johnny Underwood's little history of Dubois, minor changes made)

Inside view of cabinThe tie hacks came and harvested logs and making ties for the CB & Q railroad. They left many tracks which can still be seen today.

The Dubois Museum pays tribute to these early days with restored historic cabins, a large collection of Tie hack tools and photographs, a diorama and history of the Sheep Eater Indians (Mountain Shoshone).
